Chilko Lake
A
rugged 6-day backpacking trip, beginning in the Tchaikazan Valley, climbing
over Spectrum Pass, and dropping down for a pick-up by Roland Class' water taxi
at the mouth of Rainbow Creek on the shore of Chilko Lake. This is a wilderness
hike through some of the most stellar and remote reaches of the Chilcotin Wilderness
east of BC's coast range.
Location
Chilko Lake, British Columbia. This is a remote area accessed by backroads east
of Williams Lake in the Chilcotin off of the highway to Bella Coola. A high
clearance vehicle is preferable but not required (we've done it in a Toyota
Echo!)
Chilko Lake is a high sub-alpine lake (about 1300 m above
sea level) surrounded by glaciated 2700 m granite peaks. The Chilcotin is similar
to the Coast Range but drier. Travel is characterised by rugged scenery, wide
valleys, beautiful alpine meadows, and light yellow pine forest below treeline.
